Abstract

Purpose; This study was to delve into the meaning and substantial nature of newborn nursery care practice among male nursing students by applying a research method based on hermeneutic phenomenology in an attempt to lay the foundation for enhancing theoretical and practical child nursing education.

Method; This study by applying a research method based on hermeneutic phenomenology by applying van Manan¡¯s research method.

Result; The study was conducted from September 2005 to May 2006, and the subjects were 11 nursing students at J college. The following themes were identified as what the male nursing students investigated went through during a period of newborn nursery care practice:
- They had expectations for the practice.
- The stereotype of those whom they met during the practice term made them bewildered.
- They were made to stay away from actual nursing services.
- They didn¡¯t feel at ease because of excessive caring of others.
- They had a chance to acquire information on neonates.
- A variety of experience let them build confidence.
- They woke up to the worth of life.
- They newly realized the endless love of their parents for themselves.

Conclusion; Based on the above-mentioned findings, there are some suggestions:
1. Students should be given an opportunity for preliminary practice, and they should be allowed to get role training and study on their own.
2. Systematic educational practice programs should be prepared.
3. Each group for practice should be organized by a pair of students of the same gender.
4. Sustained research should be implemented to give them encouragement.
